How Can A Chiropractor Help With Pregnancy Related Pelvic Pain?

Pregnancy is a time of profound transformation. It is a journey where the body demonstrates its incredible capacity for adaptation by shifting and changing every single day to support new life.

While this process is natural, it can also bring physical challenges. Pelvic pain, for example, is common and it can make walking, sleeping, or even sitting a struggle.

Our role is to honour and support the amazing process that is pregnancy. We work to gently enhance your body’s function, helping to ease discomfort so you can more fully embrace the experience of this special time. It’s about creating greater comfort and balance for both you and your baby.

Understanding Pelvic Changes During Pregnancy

Your pelvis is a strong, ring-like structure of bones that provides a stable foundation for your spine and hips. During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called relaxin, which has the remarkable job of softening the ligaments that hold these bones together.

This softening is essential. It allows the pelvis to become more flexible and open in preparation for childbirth. However, this increased laxity means the pelvic joints, particularly the sacroiliac joints at the back, can become less stable than they were before.

Why Pelvic Pain Is Common as the Body Adapts

As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward. This places entirely new demands on your lower back and pelvis. When you combine this weight shift with the effects of relaxin, it’s easy for small imbalances in pelvic alignment to occur.

This is often the source of pregnancy-related pelvic pain, sometimes called Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP). One joint may move more than another, or muscles may tighten to compensate for the lack of stability.

The resulting discomfort is simply a sign that your body is working hard to adapt to these rapid, beautiful changes.

The Role of Joint Mobility and Muscle Support

In a well-functioning pelvis, the joints move in a balanced, symmetrical way, and the surrounding muscles provide coordinated support.

However, if one of the pelvic joints becomes restricted or misaligned, the muscles have to work overtime to try and stabilise the area. This leads to muscle fatigue, strain, and persistent pain.

The key is to restore harmonious movement. When the pelvis is balanced, the muscles can function as they are designed to, providing support without unnecessary strain.

Gentle Chiropractic Approaches During Pregnancy

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is both safe and gentle. We use modified techniques that are specifically adapted to the pregnant body, ensuring there is no pressure on your abdomen.

Our adjustments are specific and aimed at restoring proper motion to the pelvic joints. We also use special pillows and tables to ensure you are comfortable and fully supported. We focus on working with your body’s natural intelligence, not against it.

Supporting Comfort Through Daily Movement

The care we provide is a partnership. We support the work we do in the clinic with practical advice you can use in your daily life to maintain comfort and balance.

This often includes guidance on posture, such as how to sit and stand to minimise pelvic strain. We may also suggest gentle stretches or movements that can help to release tension. These small, mindful actions can make a significant difference in your day-to-day comfort.

Preparing the Body for Recovery

Supporting pelvic balance is about more than just relieving current discomfort. It’s also about preparing your body for the demands of labour and supporting a smoother postpartum recovery.

A well-aligned pelvis can function more efficiently during childbirth. By helping your body maintain its natural harmony, we support its innate ability to navigate this journey. Our goal is to help you move through your pregnancy with greater ease, confidence, and vitality.
